英语小角02丨Purge还是Prime？

Welcome to Chromclass English Corner~

今天，我们讲的第一个单词是“Purge”。

这个单词相信大家都不陌生，

经常在仪器和相关技术手册上面看到，

意思是清洗，清除，吹扫。

有心的同学可能发现了他们和Pure有那么一点点关系，

Purge就来自于古拉丁语purgare。

For people who are working with HPLC,

you have to purge the system with fresh solvent before you make an HPLC injection.

对于做液相的同学们来说，

每天做样前一定要冲洗系统，

把昨天的流动相清除到系统外面。

 

During the removal of mobile phase and air bubbles,

we do not want them to enter the column and detector,

so we put a ‘switching valve’ at the pump’s outlet,

manually controlled or electronically controlled,

to switch the flow path between the HPLC system and the waste.

在清除流动相和气泡的时候，

我又不想让它们都进入到色谱柱和检测器，

所以在泵出口的地方，设计了一个流路切换阀，

有手动控制的，也有自动控制的。

 

During the purge the flow path is switched to the waste,

and after the purge the flow path is switched to the HPLC system.

The switching valve is also called the purge valve.

在purge的时候，切换阀将流路切换到废液通道，

purge结束后，又重新切换到进入液相色谱系统。

所以这个切换阀也叫做冲洗阀，Purge阀。

 

有时候还能使用它抽象的意思，比如说：

 

另一个经常跟Purge一起经常出现在液相色谱的操作中的单词，叫Prime。

这是一个有非常多意思的有趣的单词，

既能当动词，又能当形容词，还能当名词，比如：

 

As an adjective, Prime means

“the greatest relevance or significance”

or “of the first importance”.

作为形容词，它的意思是：

主要的，首要的，或者最重要的，优质的

比如说：This Merlot is prime!  这酒真棒!

 

As a noun, Prime means

“the most flourishing stage or state”

or “the time of earlymanhood or womanhood”,

and can be used as follows:

 

作为名词的时候，Prime意味着：

鼎盛时期，或者年富力强的时期

 

比如说：

◊……………………………………………….◊……………………………………………….◊

I want to use the prime of my youth to absorb the knowledge of the world.

我想用我的青春年华来吸收世界的知识。

As averb, Prime means

“to prepare or make ready for a particular purpose or operation”.

 

作为动词，Prime的意思是：

为某个特定目的做好准备。

 

比如，可以这样用：

◊……………………………………………….◊……………………………………………….◊

This morning, Itzel forgot to prime her face before she applied her makeup.

今天早上，Itzel化妆之前忘记打粉底了。

 

The politician was primed by his aides for the press conference.

助手事先让政客对新闻发布会做好准备。

 

If someone primes a bomb or a gun, they prepare it so that it is ready to explode or fire.

如果某人装填炸弹或者枪支，意味着他们准备爆炸或者开火。

 

One of its other meanings is,

“to pour or admit liquid into(a pump) to expel air and prepare for action.”

它还有一个意思是：把液体注入泵来排出空气。

 

Priming the HPLC means to let the mobile phase enter the pump and get rid of the air bubbles.

Most of the time, people use a syringe attached to the pump’s outlet

to pull the mobile phase into the pump so that it can initialize efficiently.

所以在液相色谱里面，

prime the HPLC system就是让流动相进入到泵腔内，

把泵里面的空气都排出，

很多时候都是用注射器接在泵出口，

将流动相抽到泵内，

这样泵能够更好地启动工作。

 

To summarize, when the HPLC system is newly installed or has not been used in a while,

the whole pump including the tubing is emptied,

therefore, we have to PRIME the system to let the mobile phase enter and better initialize the pump.

所以我们稍微总结一下，

在液相色谱刚刚安装或者放置了很长时间后，

整个系统的泵包括脱气机管路空的，

我们说我们要Prime这个系统，

让流动让进入，让泵顺利启动。

 

If we are using the HPLC regularly,

every morning when we power it on,

we need to PURGE the system with fresh mobile phase to replace the mobile phase from yesterday

and get rid of the air bubbles.

如果我们每天都在用这个液相，

每天早上开机后，

需要用新鲜的流动相来去置换昨天的流动相，

并去除系统内的气泡，

我们说我们要purge这个系统。

 

Actually,these two words are not authoritatively defined;

some people use these words interchangeably,

and we think that is OK!

当然，这两个单词也没有特别权威的定义上的区别，

很多地方都混着用，其实问题也不大。

 

At last,we want to introduce a movie called “Prime” starring Uma Thurman!

It is a romantic comedy about a relationship between a 37-year-old businesswoman and a handsome 23-year-old man.

最后，给大家介绍一部电影，名字就叫Prime，

大美女Uma Thurman主演的浪漫喜剧，

大概就讲的37岁大龄女青年与23岁小鲜肉偶然邂逅，

一见倾心，虽然相爱，终无结果的故事。

这个电影的中文译名叫“春心荡漾”，

但它还有一个译名叫做“最好的时光”。

马克吐温曾经说过：

Age is an issue of mind over matter.

If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

年龄这事儿心态重于事实。

你若不在意，便不重要。

虽然影片的结局最终爱情败给了现实，

但他们至少尝试过努力打破世俗观念，努力为爱付出，

这段真诚又热烈的爱恋是值得他们永久回忆的美好时光。
